Bruce Peninsula Hospice exceeds 2024 Hike for Hospice fundraising goal

On Sunday June 2nd, Bruce Peninsula Hospice once again brought the community together to hike, to raise awareness and funds, and to celebrate our achievements. The rain held off and the well attended event reminded everyone of the power of “local people helping local people”.

We were fuelled by the support of our sponsors Bruce Power, Ebel Quarries Inc./Polycor Ontario, Middlebro’ & Stevens LLP (Wiarton Office), and Sunshine Drugs McKenzie’s IDA Pharmacy. Their sustained commitment over the years is greatly appreciated. We were also happy to be acknowledged for our work by the attendance and words of MPP Byers and Town of South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Kirkland along with a message from MP Ruff. We also heard some details of the Live Well at Home initiative. But it was the words of a client that spoke to the heart …

It has been a year now and Hospice care has been an important part of my mental health with ALS. The three volunteers I had the pleasure of meeting this year were all engaging, interesting and thoughtful, more like friends. Each is unique. Each has brought their own unique talents to the visits. The common factor was care and empathy. Thanks, folks

With those words of praise and encouragement participants hit the sidewalks of Wiarton and the beautiful Bruce Trail, all clad in our new purple T-shirts, proudly committing ourselves anew to the caring work of visiting hospice and grief support. Bruce Peninsula Hospice … our own, home-grown response to the needs of our community.

The hike raised $36,500 – exceeding our goal and reaching our highest total ever! Once again, the community came through for us. Chair, Bettyanne Waddington expressed gratitude on behalf of the entire organization.

The support from our sponsors and all our donors has been incredible! It is awesome to exceed our fundraising goal! Our hikers/volunteers have done an amazing job collecting support from our communities. The Hike Committee and their support staff worked so hard to pull it all together. It is an honour to be part of BPH – we truly are ‘local people helping local people’, just like our t-shirt’s claim.

Next year marks the 30th anniversary of Bruce Peninsula Hospice and we have exciting plans for the 2025 Hike for Hospice.
